Why Is My Check Engine Light On?
posted on
1/9/2020 2:24:21 PM
Why is my check engine light on? The check engine light will illuminate for a large number of reasons. A lot of uncertainty orbits when that little light starts to shine, partly because you might not know what it means exactly. The check engine light is used for just about everything in your vehicle, including the gas cap. Of course, there are plenty of things that can be a disaster, but some may be relatively easy fixes.
A car’s check engine light is a diagnostic tool that lights up when a car’s on-board computer issues an error warning. The light is usually shaped in a pictogram of the engine with text that says, “check engine” or ‘service engine soon’ on your dashboard. The check engine light usually has two stages which determine the severity of the issue, steady, indicating a minor fault, and flashing, indicating a severe problem.
Common Reasons Your Check Engine Light is on
Oxygen Sensor Failure: The oxygen sensor measures the amount of unburnt oxygen in a car’s exhaust system. A faulty oxygen sensor can damage components like the spark plugs and the catalytic converter. It may also cause a car to fail an emissions test.
Loose Gas Cap: A loose gas cap is one of the most common reasons why the check engine light turns on. The cap is a crucial part of a car’s fuel-delivery system. It notably prevents gasoline fumes from leaving the fuel tank, and it helps keep the whole system under the correct pressure.
Catalytic Converter Failure: Your catalytic converter helps protect our environment by converting harmful carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. Damage usually occurs due to neglected maintenance.
Faulty Spark Plug Wires: Issues with the spark plug wiring can cause your check engine light to come on. These wire conduct electricity from the ignition coils to the spark plugs, allowing them to ignite the fuel in the engine cylinder. Faulty wires won’t conduct electricity well which will fail to ignite the fuel.
Mass Airflow Sensor Failure: Your mass airflow sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine to determine how much fuel is needed to run your engine efficiently. Reduced gas mileage and stalling can also indicate a mass airflow sensor problem.
These are the most common reasons, but there are others too. Finding out why your check engine light is on may help you save gas and avoid more problems down the road. The check engine light provides an idea of what’s wrong with a car. However, it doesn’t replace a skilled mechanic. Don’t wait until the check engine light comes on to repair your car.
